An interesting essay on the blog Medium from an author of four travel books who says he travels solo because it forces him to engage with his surrounding, it's better for the environment, and other reasons. Check it out here.

I generally travel alone too.It was a choice I made when I couldn't find someone to go with me and decided I go alone or not at all. I'd rather go alone than sit home doing nothing. There are upsides to it for sure - no arguments about where to eat, I get up when I want - no waiting for the other person, no vying for time in the shower, I see what I want, no discussions about which is better; this or that? And as a photo bug I can stop and take whatever catches my fancy and spend as long as I want doing so!
And, as you do point out, when traveling alone you engage with others much more readily. When you have a travel partner, you pretty much converse with each other. I have never regretted my solo trips!
