Snow sports in ´Our Winter Adventure Above Norway´s Arctic Circle´

Nearly 20 years ago, I visited Norge for the first time – on a press trip sponsored by Visit Norway to capital Oslo, historic second city Bergen, and a Hurtigruten cruise to the fjords and up to far-northern Svalbard. It was all beautiful, of course, but it was in summertime, and over this past Christmas and New Year´s I had to privilege of coming back in winter. Naturally, it was a whole different – and a chilling yet in many ways even more enchanting – experience. read post

A few essential items to have for winter sports and travel

PickPik Winter may now already be on its way out, but if this one’s for anyone already thinking of next season. A couple of months ago, in preparation for a whirl through the winter wonderland above Norway’s Arctic Circle, I realized that the usual winter togs that serve me well enough in Spain just weren’t going to cut it in serious snow, ice, and temperatures forecasted to drop as low as 5⁼ Fahrenheit (-15⁼ Celsius). So I educated myself about what new cold-weather clothes gear I would…

7 of Austria´s best winter resorts

gevison by Felice Hardy Did you know that you can ski in 274 countries - even including Hawaii and South Africa? The skiing countries of the world certainly do vary a lot, but if you're yearning for world-class winter sports outside cute, classic little chocolate-box villages with friendly family-run hotels and chalet-style architecture like the gingerbread house out of Hansel and Gretel - and perhaps cosy, gemütlich mountain eateries serving heart-warming comfort food - the Austrian…

Finland´s winter wonderland in ´7 Awesome Active Vacation Ideas for 2023´

Hippopx.com For some truly memorable, frosty fun, Lappi (Lapland), a four-hour flight from Helsinki, serves up the perfect winter adventure. You can spend your day skating over the ice or watching reindeer or huskies run in the snow as they pull your sled. Spots like Kakslauttanen also offer day trips on the icebreaker Sampo as it clears the path through Bothnia Gulf. You can try your hand at ice fishing, or if you’re brave enough, even plunge into the freezing waters, followed by a nice hot…

  • Holy caca! I thought I could ski! Great show, Ed!
  • What a gorgeous, wonderful inspiring piece of work! Both the skiing and the videography. In my next life, I intend to ski that well through that much untracked powder, although the cliff jumping would not be a requirement. The 'zen' of a perfect turn, and the view, is what keeps all of on the slopes.

A bit of clarification -- these guys were not skiing at the Jackson Hole Ski Resort. They were skiing out-of-bounds, in Grand Teton National Park, which is up the road from the resort and not monitored by National Ski Patrol or groomed by those giant snow smoothing machines. There are similar cliff bands within the resort, but wherever they stick out, they are clearly roped off to be avoided, even by skiers this good.

A bit of history -- The first man to ski the Grand Teton, the tallest peak in the park, did it solo, more than 50 years ago, after climbing up with the skis on his back. No helicopters to drop him there and no camera crews to immortalize the feat, so not many people know about him.
  • Yesterday we were planning a ski trip for January. Today, coincidentally, I stumbled upon this prize-winning video taken in Jackson Hole. The skier is my nephew, Matt.
  • Ski Discounts Have any of you used Liftopia.com or can you assess its usefulness?
  • Mike, this might be an answer. Planning ski trip to Park City for January, and The Canyons has new bubble-enclosed quad lift with HEATED SEATS. Hope everyone will do that now.
  • Hello all!
Just thought I'd let the group know that the 2-bed apartment in my chalet in Le Grand Bornand (1 hour Geneva) in the French Alps is available for a full-season rental (December - April inclusive) this winter ... Please get in touch for more details/price. Sleeps 4 in comfort - 3 minutes to pistes by car or 10-15 minutes on foot.
Please do help spread the word or let me know if you know anywhere obvious to advertise a full season's rental.
Anyone need any advice on skiing in Le Grand Bornand or neighbouring La Clusaz, just ask.
    Thanks!
    Wink
  • Hey people,

I just thought I would let you know I am the new Big Earth snow sports expert (expert in the loosest sense of the word). So I am frantically trying to gather information for some features and news items and of course thought of my friends over at Tripatini for advice.

I am currently researching new trends in the ski/snowboard world - which resorts are trying different things in terms of the environment, pricing, access etc.

Also if any of you know of any new resorts opening this year (season 2010/2011) then please let me know.

    Cheers

    Mike
  • hristmas, New Year's, and President's Day Week or Weekend is just one of our areas of expertise when planning your holiday ski trip. Family ski trips, with free or discounted lift tickets for the kids, or large homes for lodging the extended family are a piece of cake! to stay Vermont ski resorts is the best place.
  • You're right Jordan. You just have to cross fingers and go.
  • Weather is never reliable, whatever the region, David. Even during heavy snowfall periods, Whistler-Blackcomb, like most Pacific ski areas from Tahoe north, "suffers" from Cascade crud. The snow is rarely feathery light. I suggest looking into BC and Alberta areas in the Rockies. Though I love W-B when the snow is right simply for the variety of terrain and apres-ski experiences
