At least 236 years old but likely even older, this massive tree (also known as a kapok) in downtown Freetown near the National Museum is symbolic for the country because it was the site of a thanksgiving mass held in 1792 by former slaves who gained their freedom from the British after fighting for them in the American Revolution and subsequently came to Africa and founded this city.
