Beautiful - and culturally meaningful - things to shop for in Kenya

For many, the first thing that comes to mind when it comes to Kenya is wildlife and safaris. But visitors should also keep in mind this country´s rich artistic and cultural heritage - thanks to its more than 70 ethnic groups such as the Kikuyu, Kamba, Luhya, Maasai, and Kalenjin  - both to witness (such as tribal dances) and to buy as mementos of their trip here (esecially masks, figurines, and other forms of sculpture). Shopping for winter travel

PickPik Winter may now already be on its way out, but if this one’s for anyone already thinking of next season. A couple of months ago, in preparation for a whirl through the winter wonderland above Norway’s Arctic Circle, I realized that the usual winter togs that serve me well enough in Spain just weren’t going to cut it in serious snow, ice, and temperatures forecasted to drop as low as 5⁼ Fahrenheit (-15⁼ Celsius). So I educated myself about what new cold-weather clothes gear I would need…

  • I can't believe it, but, Yohji Yamamoto is closing his only two shops in North America, both located in NYC... I've been visiting NYC primarily to shop for clothes at Yohji's stores for our restaurant staff and myself for years, and this has to be a huge loss for America. Oh well, we'll have to go to Paris more often!

  • Though a lot of my travels now focus on culinary topics and Jewish audiences (but not for the same papers ;-) ), I always love to sneak out to shop because coming home with something special is really delicious. Sometimes I buy a few things I regret, but most of what I bring back for my home and wardrobe I really use and enjoy. My favorite shopping cities so far are Hong Kong, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro and Rome. I also find some random places where there are bargains despite the weak dollar. For example, I found a fabulous winter coat from a prominent Dutch designer retailing for about $500 at a local TK Maxx (not TJ Maxx) in Dublin for $64.
