The vibrant market of Ziguinchor, Casamance

The region´s capital (pop. 230,000), founded by Portuguese traders in the mid 17th century at the mouth of the Casamance River leading out to the Atlantic, is notable for its leafy streets; colonial architecture; and the Saint Maur-des- Fosses Market, which in addition to produce and other foodstuffs offers visitors clothing, art, and crafts including ceramics, masks, sculptures, and paintings.
