Albuquerque, New Mexico is a Route 66 road trip star

Practically due west 290 miles of Amarillo, Texas (and taking four hours unless you stop at these places along the way, which I highly encourage) brings road trippers to the largest city (pop. 557,000) in the state that bills itself as "The Land of Enchantment," and here Route 66 follows Central Avenue through the heart of the city. Albuquerque features a fascinating blend of Native American, Hispanic, and Anglo influences. Visitors can stroll through the adobe-lined streets of Old Town; learn about First Nations cultures at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center; and ride the Sandia Peak Tramway for sweeping views of the surrounding desert and mountains. The city´s also known for its distinctive cuisine, featuring New Mexico's beloved red and green chile peppers.
