One of America's most historic states, it ranges from the urban flair (and grit) of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh to the bucolic beauties of the Poconos, Dutch Country, and Bucks County. And for history, Philly and Gettysburg! are absolute bucket-listers.

Longwood Gardens in 'Spring Has Sprung & U.S. Gardens Await Discovery'

Spring is here, and summer's already around the corner!  If you’re a flower gardener - and the National Gardening Association estimates that members of over a third of U.S. households are - you already may have begun to till soil and plant seeds. And those who like to travel as well as garden (as well as those who enjoy gardens more by watching than working), now is time to plan a trip to take in some of Mother Nature’s bountiful beauty. Gardens come in a variety of types, sizes and offerings.…

Deerfield Retreat & Spa in the Pocono Mountains

Admittedly, I'd never heard of Lo-Wei, a unique exercise class that combines yoga, strength training and flexibility that stretched my body in ways my mind never thought possible. But it is only one of almost three dozen fitness classes, all part of the dawn-to-dusk workout, weight loss, and education focus of the one-of-a-kind, all-inclusive Deerfield Health Retreat and Spa in East Stroudsburg, in the Poconos Mountains of Pennsylvania, where my friend Kathy and I spent three nights a while…

Kinzua Sky Walk cited in 'In the USA this Fall, Combine Foliage with Adventure'

Dan and Mary Stroudt oooh and aaah at the multicolored scenery below the hot air balloon in which they’re riding. The journey is very different for Mark and Marylee Sutherland as they help to paddle a rubber raft along a stretch of whitewater in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Betsy Goodman and Tom Cross are traveling at a slower pace, strolling across a glass-bottom observation deck. These disparate experiences may seem to have little in common, but they do. They provide…

  • Not nearly as dramatic as the Pennsylvania elk (few things are), but today's walk around a lake in NE PA with my dog made us both pretty happy.

  • Looking for PA's newest fall attraction? Check out the new Elk Country Visitors Center near Benezette to see the Northeast's largest elk herd in one of the most beautiful fall foliage destinations!

Situated on 245 acres within the heart of Pennsylvania's elk range and within the Elk State Forest, the Elk Country Visitor Center is a premier elk watching and conservation education facility in the Pennsylvania Wilds and the entire Eastern United States.

The Center provides a needed focal point for elk watching tourists coming to the area. State-of-art interpretive and interactive exhibits that inform and educate the public about elk, wildlife conservation and green building design make the facility popular for school field trips and family vacation travelers alike.

Guided and self-guided elk tours are also available throughout the region. Visit
    www.experienceelkcountry.com to learn more!
  • I just read Linda L. Riley's blog on Tripatini about the Battle of Germantown. You must read it! This is an exciting event. When my husband and I attended, they did not have the dog exchange, so now the event is even better!
  • This is a big weekend for history buffs - the Battle of Germantown is fought again. (we lose -- again) A great annual event even better this year, beer lovers, because it closes with an Oktoberfest at Grumblethorpe. And a cute addition is the dog exchange between Gen. Washington and Gen. Howe.
  • Tomorrow we will get up early and go to the Celtic Festival in Bethlehem. No, I will not dance -- I am far too old for that -- but the reels and jigs are hard to resist!
  • Linda, you must have ESP: my girlfriend was poking around online and she was just talking to me yesterday about the Indian Rock Inn. This must be a sign! Vincent, where did you take a cruise? Is this expensive? And how long are these cruises, and where do they go? We'd definitely like to stroll around New Hope if possible, that sounds cool. In fact, it all sounds very nice. The challenge is narrowing it down. But thank you all for pitching in!!!!
  • There are many bed and breakfasts in Bucks County - one of the more economical ones, that is still very romantic, is the Indian Rock Inn in Upper Black Eddy. It has a beautiful view of the river, and a drive down River Road will bring you to all the antique stores your wife could wish for. I don't recommend the restaurant, but there are also many of those to choose among, depending on your price range. The Black Bass is wonderful, and is also right on the river. If price is not an issue and you prefer all the modern comforts you might want to try the Golden Plough which is in Peddler's Village and has rooms with fireplaces and whirlpool baths - very romantic! And Peddler's Village is fun, there are several antique stores among the others, and very nice restaurants. My one other suggestion would be the Barley Sheaf bed and breakfast, beautiful, romantic and lovely old place -- if I remember right, back "in the day" the Marx Brothers were guests of the owner, playwright and producer George S. Kaufman.
  • My wife and I celebrated our 25th anniversary at the Bridgeton House and then two months later when we had more time we took a cruise. The Bridgeton House was all my wifes idea but she was right and it was great, I felt like a barron.
  • Mr. Kipper, before my son and future daughter-in-law had children, they used to spend weekends in Doylestown. I do not remember where they stayed, but I can say that Doylestown has grown over the years. Still, the old Quaker buildings remain, with their beautiful stone work.

More recently, their son (my grandson) and his girlfriend have stayed at the Bowman's inn, in New Hope. New Hope is charming, with many charming shops and restaurants.

My husband and I ate at the Golden Pheasant Inn in New Hope and in the Railroad Station restaurant across the river in Lambertville. They were a little pricey for me, a Depression-era girl, but the food and the romantic surroundings made me feel like a 20-year-old again !!!

  • Yo Pennsylvania!!

I want to take my girlfriend on a nice romantic weekend for Columbus Day, and I'm thinking Bucks County maybe, cozy country inn kind of thing, she's really into the whole antiquing/quilting/craftsy scene. I could really use some suggestions for where to go, where to stay, nice restaurants, etc., again with an emphasis on ROMANTIC.

    Any ideas??
