The Palais Galliera

On the same block as the Yves Saint-Laurent museum, what´s officially known as the Musée de la Mode de la Ville de Paris (Museum of Fashion of the City of Paris) was inaugurated 50 years ago in a gracious, compact Beaux-Arts building which first opened in 1895 as a museum of industrial design. It chronicles the role of clothing in French society from the 18th century to the haute couture and street fashion of the present with a permanent collection of more than 200,000 items of clothing, accessories, drawings, and photos in addition to temporary exhibitions which rotate every three or four months (a current example of which is devoted to "Weaving, Embroidering, Embellishing: The Crafts and Trades of Fashion," through next October).
