Founded in 1892 as German Southwest Africa´s main harbor, this city of around 25,000 lies on the coast at the edge of the Namib desert three hours and 40 minutes from Windhoek, and in addition to being an outpost of German architecture and culture, these days it´s also a beach resorts and adventure hub for activities like ballooning, skydiving, quad biking, and coastal cruises. Those looking for a spot of history and culture can also check out the Swakopmund Museum, the Kristall Galerie (an exhibition of crystals and gemstones), and the National Marine Aquarium.
