Swiss bliss (and a near miss!) at Eurovision 2025 in Basel

Eurovision Media Centre  Disc-riding 24-year-old Nemo having made history last year as the first non-binary winner of Eurovision for “The Code,” yesterday the 69th edition of world’s largest, longest, and perhaps most anticipated/beloved music competition came back to the country where it was born and first won the contest (with the lovely old chestnut "Refrain"), in 1956. Switzerland´s third largest city (pop. around 177,000). It must´ve been the most exciting thing to happen here since,…

Its music is cited as one of "5 Reasons Why Colombia Is Among the World´s most Appealing Destinations"

Luis PerezThe mix of cultures in this country has given rise to some 150 genres of music, the most prominent of which are cumbia (popular among the Afro-Colombians of the Caribbean coast), currulao (of Afro-Colombians on the country's other coast, on the Pacific Ocean), joropo (in the northeastern Orinoco/Llanos Orientales region), and vallenanto (also from the northeastern zone of the Caribbean coast region). In addition, Caribbean salsa has become widespread - and in one city, Cali, it's…

Merengue, the quintessential music of the Dominican Republic

LosMocanos.com Few cultural forms are more associated with the Dominican Republic than merengue music and the brisk, shuffling, hip-wagging dance that goes with it (no one’s exactly sure where the name comes from – sweet, frothy beaten egg whites or the “mareng” or “méringue” music of neighboring Haiti).  Going back more than 150 years, like tango in Argentina it once scandalized the prim and proper because of its ribald lyrics and sexy moves. Well, that’s sure as heck a thing of the past…

What went down at Eurovision 2024 in Malmö, Sweden

SVT/EBU The world´s premier song contest just completed its spectacular 68th edition with the usual lineup of singing, dancing, special effects, silliness and seriousness, pulling in a TV audience of hundreds of millions plus thousands of fans who flocked to Sweden´s third city from 90 countries. Plus this year there was a degree of history making (non-binaries, take a bow!), along with controversy in the form of scandal (thanks to a goofy Dutchman) and protests (thanks to Israel´s…

  • Thanks David .. i will check them out .. four nights in Havana .. staying at Sevilla Hotel ..
  • Shane, one of the great things about Havana (and I assume you'll be spending a good bit of time in Havana), is that music is all over the place. In particular, you'll want to see what's on at clubs like Café Cantante, El Gato Tuerto, and La Zorra y el Cuervo. There's also always a band playing at El Patio restaurant in front of the old town cathedral, and in the courtyard at the Hotel Nacional. If I think of anything else, I'll let you know!
  • Awesome.. my two favourite things .. music and travel in one discussion forum. I am going to Cuba in a few weeks and really looking forward to checking out the music down there .. anybody got directions to the Buena Vista Social Club ???

  • While in Jerusalem, I found a great store selling CDs (probably mass-copied in a back of a house) and stocked up on Umm Qulthum disks. For those of you unfamiliar with her (and her name, which means Mother Singer, is transliterated in many ways), she is Egypt's greatest singer. Rumour is that wars and skirmishes were planned for when she was not on tour. Four million people turned up to her funeral when she died in 1975, and her coffin was temporarily "kidnapped" and taken to what her followers believed was her favourite mosque. Some of my friends in the late 80s/early 90s had a London-based band, Flavel Bambi Septet, which covered her music. The band might still be going.
