Sükhbaatar Square, a key hub of Ulaanbaatar

Built in 1923 on the site of a Buddhist temple complex after the USSR-assisted Communist revolution of 1921, this huge exapanse was named after the ¨father" of that revolution (depicted in the centrally placed equestian statue you see here). It´s home to buildings including the Government Palace (including offices of the natural parliament and executive branch), a colonnade dedicated to the world´s most famous Mongol, Chingis (Genghis) Khan and a pair of skyscrapers erected just under 20 years ago.

It was briefly (2013-2016) renamed after Chingis, but reverted to its original name when the Mongolian People´s Pary came back into power (where it continues to this day). Throughout most of the 20th century  MPP was a typical, Soviet-style Marxist-Leninist party enforcing the "dictatorship of the proletariat" but since the advent of democracy has evolved into a social democratic party which has embraced many aspects of capitalism. But I guess despite that they still don´t wanna give up their precious revolutionary hero!
