Located in the city of Turkestan, in the central south of the country, this brick mausoleum, finished in 1405, was dedicated to a 12th-century Sufi mystic, and is one of the largest and best preserved structures built during the Turco-Mongol Timurid Empire, founded around that time by Timur (aka Tamerlane) and which dominated not only much of Central Asia but also what is now Iran, Iraq, and Afghanistan. It's cited by UNESCO as "an outstanding example of Timurid design that contributed to the development of Islamic religious architecture"
