Beautiful Bari!

alxpin Italy is famously packed with glorious cities to explore, which means a magical spot like Bari – which would be a headliner in many other countries – here tends to be overshadowed by the likes of Rome, Florence, Venice, its fellow southern-Italian destination Naples, and even neighbouring Apulia (Puglia) region gem Lecce. But to miss out on Apulia’s capital  – astride the Adriatic Sea right on the heel of Italy’s famous boot shape – would be a shame for reasons I’m about to go into. And…

8 interesting off-the-beaten path corners of Rome

Erik TörnerMy country´s capital famously boasts some of the world´s most legendary and inspiring tourist attractions, such as the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Spanish Steps, and Vatican City. But Rome is also overflowing with millennia worth of riches that get less attention from visitors intent on their “bucket lists”, and exploring these places off the usual tourist track can give you a deeper, more authentic, and more serene experience of the Eternal City – and by the way, avoid the…

  • Dolce Vita Turns 50 And Rome Celebrates It With Photos, Movies and Exhibitions

    By BuzzInRome

Linda Christian and Tyrone Power got married in Rome in 1949 under the eyes of the international press. In 1950 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer chose Cinecittà to shoot Quo Vadis. Stardom, celebrity and gossip become part of daily life. Nostalgic of the La Dolce Vita, this is the perfect time to go to Rome and enjoy the 50th birthday of this worldwide famous film and lifestyle. Besides the International Film Festival that is dedicating this year’s edition to Fellini’s movie, Rome teems with events about La Dolce Vita.

In one of Rome’s newest and most beautiful archaeological setting, the Trajan’s Markets, you can see a selection of the photographs taken by the first paparazzis in the 1950s showing celebrities in their mundane life. The exposition features 100 pictures and as many magazines that most contributed to the myths and the collective imagery of an era. “La Dolce Vita. 1950-1960 Stars and Celebrities in the Italian Fifties” runs until November 14. Address: 94, Via IV Novembre. From 9 am to 7 pm, Tueday to Sunday. Monday closed. For further information click here.

If you are a cinema and Fellini buff, you can’t miss “Labirinto Fellini”, an exhibition that reviews the great artistic heritage left by Italy’s most famous director. The show is both intended for newcomers and for those who are familiar with Fellini’s works. It was organized by two of his long-time assistants and is divided in two parts. The first features rare material, photos, stills and drawings showing the depth and modernity of Fellini’s art. The second one takes the visitor onto the set of the films directed by Fellini through a special installation. Labirinto Fellini is on show until January 30 at 4, Piazza Orazio Giustiniani. From 4 pm until midnight, everyday except Monday.

Finally, if you are into subtler analyses of this fascinating period, there is a documentary and photo exposition in the prestigious Senate’s Library that explains why 1960 was a turning point for Italian society, arts and politics. Italy told by the press of time with articles and pictures showing the major changes of a booming country. “1960” will run until December 20 at 38 piazza della Minerva. 10 am to 7 pm, Monday to Friday. Free entrance.

  • Italy offers plenty of good ski resorts, thanks to its geography and terrain. Skiing is a popular holiday activity among locals with many Italians taking take a 'settimana bianca' (white week) in addition to their month-long summer holiday. This friendly and relaxed affair involves a lot of eating, drinking, sunbathing and of course skiing.
Italian ski resorts come to life at night and on the weekends with plenty of glitz and glamour as city folk flood in, and for foreign visitors a ski holiday in Italy has its own special charm and pace. Italian ski resorts are more laid-back than elsewhere in the Alps, as most resorts are more suited to beginner or intermediate skiers. If you are looking for a ski holiday different from last year, try Aosta Valley (for intermediate and advanced skiing and snowboarding), Sestriere, Canazei or Livigno.

  • Strange to see this show in Rome, but to those of you who only know Webber as the composer of "Phantom" and other over-rated shows, it's worth going to Rome just to see this show. Webber and Rice used to compose amazing music; where did they go wrong?
  • “Jesus Christ Superstar” Back in Rome. Original Version On Stage!

    By BuzzInRome

The ever lasting musical Jesus Christ Superstar has come back to Rome running until November 14 and will eventually be performed in English in one of Rome’s biggest and most famous theatres: Teatro Sistina.

The set, though, is contemporary, no 1970s’ stage designing. This cult show by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber has been performed on the most prestigious world stages, a veritable classic of musical comedy.

The rock opera has a live orchestra and features several Italian pop music stars, such as Max Gazzè (Erode) and Mario Venuti (Pilate). The plot is based on Jesus’ last two weeks of life with a mix of rock music, religious topics and modern culture.

The version on show at Teatro Sistina, directed by Massimo Romeo Piparo, has been officially recognized by the Vatican for the Jubilee in 2000.

Teatro Sistina is at 129, Via Sistina. Shows will be held from Tuesday to Saturday at 9 pm. On Sundays at 5 pm. You can buy online tickets here .

  • Sally--
there's a perfect, local taverna on the bridge right at the piazza of Santi Giovanni e Paolo. I can't remember the name of it (could be "ponte" something), but you can't miss it. And you can sit in the window, drink, eat and watch the kids play in the piazza.
