Beautiful Bari!

alxpin Italy is famously packed with glorious cities to explore, which means a magical spot like Bari – which would be a headliner in many other countries – here tends to be overshadowed by the likes of Rome, Florence, Venice, its fellow southern-Italian destination Naples, and even neighbouring Apulia (Puglia) region gem Lecce. But to miss out on Apulia’s capital  – astride the Adriatic Sea right on the heel of Italy’s famous boot shape – would be a shame for reasons I’m about to go into. And…

8 interesting off-the-beaten path corners of Rome

Erik TörnerMy country´s capital famously boasts some of the world´s most legendary and inspiring tourist attractions, such as the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Spanish Steps, and Vatican City. But Rome is also overflowing with millennia worth of riches that get less attention from visitors intent on their “bucket lists”, and exploring these places off the usual tourist track can give you a deeper, more authentic, and more serene experience of the Eternal City – and by the way, avoid the…

Seeking a hotel in Naples to review this October (2025)

My colleague and I be on a press trip to Sorrento from October 19-22, and wanted to add a couple of extra nights in Naples. I am seeking Naples properties that are open to hosting a journalist in exchange for articles in upscale publications from the 16th-18th (I will provide recently published PDFs from these publications) covering a variety of topics (luxury travel, business travel, culinary travel) and am traveling with a wellness journalist on the same trip. We are open to sharing a room,…

  • Sally:
I am not an expert on Cicheti but these are the places listed in the Slow Food 2011 guide book. I never travel anywhere in Italy without it and have never been disappointed. I would seriously suggest these places first before "winging" it in Venice. Venetians on a whole are wonderful people don't get me wrong it is just that I constantly hear about Tourists getting ripped off and it is a shame.. So:

    Da Alberto
Osteria da Alberto, Venezia, Calle Giacinto Gallina Cannaregio,, Telephone 041 5238

Trattoria All' Arco San Polo (Rialto), 436
    30125 VENEZIA(VE)

    Al Bacareto
    Campo San Samuele-San Marco 3447

CAVATAPPI. Campo de la guerra, 525/526 - san marco

    ****CODROMA
    Ponte del Soccorso
    30123 Venezia, Italia
    041 5246789
This is my favorite. I have been several times.

Good Luck.. Have a fab time. Feel free to contcat me.
  • One last Venetian query: Does anyone know a good place to enjoy the cicchetti bar snacks that are popular in Venice?
  • Thank you Maria. You are the second person to recommend Da Michele to me.
  • Hello Karin,
Thank you so much. Local knowledge is worth gold. We ate there last year at a place that had opened that day! Can't offhand remember the name but it was something to do with a newspaper - .... Giornale? - and was between the Rialto Bridge and St Mark's. I need to dig thru my files to fin the name.
  • Ed.. regarding fish restaurants in Venice. I live in Mestre which is across the bridge on the main land. I have lived here for 20 yrs. The only places that I will eat in Venice are below. I highly recommend them. I like Corte Sconta but only for lunch. I haven't been there in awhile though..

    Osteria Al Bacco
    Sestiere Cannaregio, 3054
    30121 tel 041 721415

    RISTORANTE RIVIERA -
    Dorsoduro 1473 - 30123 - Tel.041 5227621

Trattoria Antiche Carampane :: San Polo, 1911
    30125 :: Tel 041-5240165
  • For a great place for pizza in Naples, try Da Michele. It offers just two types, the plane tomato and the margherita. Can't go wrong. Go ahead and get in the queue.:))
  • Oh how I understand that Ed. I am working on Italian material right now (can't you tell?) and it's like having a little holiday there. Great fun, food and travel writing.
  • Thanks, Sally; happy to hear this. Meanwhile, no joke: I just wandered through Greenwich Village with my feet in Manhattan but my mind on a real Neapolitan pizza.
