Named after a 10th-century poet, this narrow, car-free street has been the heart of Baghdad's intellectual scene since the early Middle Ages. It extends for just under a kilometre, lined with bookshops and book stalls as well as galleries and cafés (including the landmark al-Shabandar, established in 1917). It's best visited on Friday, I'm told.
