About a half hour east, of present'day city of León, León Viejo is the ruins of the first attempt to found the city, in 1524. The town was abandoned after a 1610 earthquake, when everyone relocated to the site of the current city. These days, this UNESCO World Heritage Site does give you some truly fascinating insight into the life, times, and architecture of the earliest period of Spanish colonization.
