A quick ferry ride from capital Dakar, this is a popular destination for visitors from the African diaspora as well as others interested in the translatlantic slave trade because it was the African coast's largest slave-trading centre from the 15th to the 19th century - for that reason it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site - and in addition to the slave quarters and the trader manses there are a couple of interesting museums here.
