When I was visiting Lake Atitlán exactly 20 years ago, I found myself in a local gallery intrigued by this Santa Cena by oil painter Angelina Quic Ixtamer (b. 1972) from the local town San Juan la Laguna (which has of late become something of an artsy mecca). She overcame prejudice against female painters and developed a signature naïf "vista de pájaro" (bird´s-eye-view) style apparent in this work. Furthermore, each of the figures at the table are depicted in dress typical of the different communities on the lake (I just wonder how the town represented by Judas must´ve felt). This is a great example of a memorable travel souvenir, which reminds me of this trip each every day I´m at my apartment on Spain´s Costa del Sol (where it hangs, of course, in the dining area).
