An island that's actually Greece´s northwesternmost point, Corfu is considered the lushest of the Greek islands and has ended up with the usual holiday-isle mix of tourism-saturated beach pockets (popular especially with Brits) balanced by bucolic landscapes and villages of its rugged interior. It's thought to be the ispiration for Prospero's island in William Shakespeare's The Tempest.
