Although most of its pre-19th-century architecture is gone, many of the capital's attractions for visitors are concentrated in this district straddling the Kura River, including the 4th-century Narikala fortress, the 16th-century La Residence Castle, the Kartiis Deda monument, and various churches (including the city's oldest surviving church, 6th-century Anchiskhati Basilic), museums (including history and wine museums), bathhouses, and characteristic wooden houses with carved balconies.
