Belgium´s iconic waffles in Brussels

In the national capital, gaufres (or in Flemish, wafels, top) aren´t just a treat, they´re a veritable institution. There are two main types – the caramelised and denser Liège style, and the light and crunchy Brussels style – the most important question is: what are you going to top it with? Melted chocolate? Fresh fruit? A little whipped cream perhaps? Or how about one of each?

And where to try them? A surefire, 196-year-old classic is the Maison Dandoy bakery and tearoom (below), located just next to the Grand Palais. But street stalls also have their charm and are often less pricey.
