The town of Homer on the southern Kenai Peninsula, a four-hour drive from Anchorage, is known as the "Halbit Fishing Capital of the World," is also known for its salmon fishing and every March hosts the Winter King Salmon Tournament, the West Coast´s largest angling competition (marking its 30th anniversary this year); another popular contest is June´s Homer Halbut Derby. And of course year round there are plenty of charters ready to take you out to cast your own line.
