Built in the mid-18th century, this sea fortress (also known as Sveaborg) 2.5 kilometres from city centre (you get here via 15-minute ferry ride) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that´s especially interesting because it´s spread out over eight islands, six of them fortified and five connected to each other by bridges. Visitors can explore the ramparts, barracks, courtyards, the shipyard, a church which doubles as a lighthouse, and five museums. There are also eateries and even a couple of lodging options!
