A Nordic land of sophisto cities like Helsinki, Turku, and Tampere but also beautiful lakes, islands, Lapps, Santa Claus, and the midnight sun. As Monty Python once put it, "Finland, Finland, Finland, the country where I quite want to be..."

Helsinki's Tuomiokirkko cited in '8 Gems among Europe's Lesser Known Cathedrals and Churches'

Dimitry B   The neoclassical Lutheran "Domesday Church" (top) in the gracious, laid-back Finnish capital was finished in 1852 and is notable for its striking white, green and gold exterior, contrasted with a simple wooden interior. It's perched on top of a long flight of steps, which in the summer become the city’s favorite public bench: a place to have some fresh Finnish strawberries and catch street buskers doing their thing. With a Greek-cross layout, its interior is elegant but simple…

Finland's ephemeral winter lake art

An architect-designer in southern Finland has returned to a frozen lake with a snow shovel to draw a large animal on the ice for the sixth year in a row, creating an artwork that he hopes will “make people happy and encourage them to go out to hike in a beautiful nature.”  Great stuff, I hope he does it again next year so I can go see it!  Read the article here.

Muoinio cited in '7 Top Spots to Spot the Aurora Borealis'

Northern Lights, also known as Aurora Borealis are one of the most breathtaking sights one can ever experience. The mixture of unearthly colors display including magenta, emerald green and turquoise is so worth watching. You would be lucky enough if you get to see pink, red and purple also. It is not at all easy to spot the northern lights, however the best time to see them is from late September to late March. During these months, the nights are longest and skies are darkest. Seeing the…

  • kuusamo sunrise

After the long, dark winter months in Kuusamo, northern Finland, the bright summer days are real tonic to the soul. And the amount of light we get is incredible. At the end of May it’s already light for 24 hours a day, although the sun does officially set for around two and a half hours.

  • The big freeze has begun in northern Finland, with our lakes already frozen enough to walk over. This is a video I made about the eerie noise the ice makes as it is forming. not what you'd expect at all!

  • To reach the best ski resorts in Finland you need to travel above the Arctic Circle into Lapland. Although Finnish resorts are at low altitudes compared with those of the Alps, snow is always guaranteed and conditions are nearly always perfect. Skiing is ideal for beginners and intermediates, although advanced skiers will be challenged by the off-piste opportunities. Finnish "tunturis" offer excellent opportunities for snow sports, and the country’s long periods of frost-weather and clean white snow favors both alpine and cross-country skiing. The first snow usually falls in October and piles up until the end of March - lasting as late as May.
Choose to ski under the stars and Northern lights in mid-winter, or with 20 hours of often sunny daylight in April. Apres ski is something else, with a choice of Reindeer safaris, Husky dog-sled trips or turn up the adrenaline with a snowmobile adventure.
