I happened to be in town for this little to-do  - not for national independence day (that's August 10th) but rather the date when in 1820 the city and province of Guayaquil declared its independence from Spain, which is celebrated throughout the country because it was a key moment, two years before the country as a whole got its independence. Strike up the band!
