Some 300 of these tailless macaque monkeys live in the Upper Rock area - Europe's only wild monkey population - and are looked after by local authorities. They originated in Morocco's Atlas Mountains - where many still in fact live - and some believe they crossed under the Strait of Gibraltar via subterranean passages connecting to St. Michael's Cave. It's also a popular belief that as long as they exist here, Gib will remain British - in fact, during World War II, when their numbers dwindled to just seven, Winston Churchill ordered new ones brought in from Morocco and Algeria.
They delight visitors today with their antics, and will climb all over your car - and sometimes even you! (And watch your possessions, they can be mischeivous and larcelous little buggers, too.)
