A five-hour drive from Kampala (you can also take charter flights) and not far from the town of Masindi and Lake Albert, Murchison Falls covers more than 1,500 square miles up in the northwest. Here you'll find some 450 bird species and nearly 80 types of mammals, most notably lions, elephants, hippos, chimpanzees, giraffes, and the country's biggest population of Nile crocodiles. There are a number of safari lodges and tented camps, and in addition to game drives visitors can also take balloon safaris and cruises on the Victoria Nile River, which runs through the park (and forms the eponymous Murchison Falls, which drops 141 feet as it passes through a 23-foot gorge).
