Split between North Carolina and Tennessee, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a gorgeous, 816-square-mile expanse of rolling, forested hills. In addition to hiking; biking, fishing; camping; canoeing, kayaking and tubing on the Pigeon River, and horseback riding, there are also plenty of historical sites dating back to the 19th-century frontier days.
