The salt pans of Sal Island

Salt production has since the late 18th century been big on this 85-square-mile island, and continues to this day albeit less prominent. Now it´s more known for its beautiful beaches like Santa Maria, and Ponta Pedra (fabulous surfing!); water sports (windsurfing kitesurfing, and snorkeling are especially popular); other outdoor activities.
