Velikovo Tarnovo, the heart of Bulgaria

Some 2½ hours east of Sofia, this small cliffside city is considered the country´s historical and spiritual capital. Many sites remain for visitors to enjoy, including Tsarevets Fortress, the Samovodska Charshia artesan market streets; a number of fine museums; a plethora of beautiful Bulgarian Orthodox churches and monasteries, the most prominent of which is the Patriarchal Cathedral St. Ascension; and Sveta Gora Park, a relaxing green space with spectacular city views (especially from its Sky Bridge).
