This nocturnal, flightless parrot endemic to New Zealand (and the world´s heaviest parrot, reaching up to four pounds in mass and two feet in height) was once common but over the years declined severely thanks to English colonizers´ destruction of their habitats and introducing non-native predators like cats, rats, and ferrets. These days the current population is just over 200 identified individuals; they´re preserved only on five predator-free islands, and anyone who visits to spot them has to undergo rigorous screening.
