Dating back from 5,000 to as much as 20,000 years ago, some 6,000 cave carvings are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site designated the Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape, spread over 537 hectares (two square miles) in the Gobustan State Historical and Cultural Reserve, about an hour-and-a-half drive from Baku. They depict people, animals, warriors and battles, rituals, camel caravans, and heavenly bodies such as the sun and stars. There are inscriptions and graffiti too, left by soldiers of Alexander the great and the Roman emperor Trajan. There´s also a museum on site displaying flints, shells, ceramics, beads, and primitive tools, and well as interpretive explanations and exhibits.
