Most research stations down here are closed to the general public except for VIPs. There are several exceptions, though, such as this one, established by Britain in 1975 at Rothera point on Adelaide Island, home to around 100 people in the summer (which is when virtually all tourism to Antarctica occurs) and down to 22 in winter. Coordinated by accredited tour operators, a visit here provides a fascinating glimpse into how people live and work in an isolated outpost at the bottom of the world.
