Located in the south about an hour and a half from Gjirokastër and 4½ from Tirana, Butrint National Park comprises ruins of Greek and later Roman Buthrotum dating back to the 10th century BCE. It became Bouthrotos during the Byzantine period, and Butrinto under the Venetians, remaining densely populated till at least the 13th century and finally abandoned later during the Middle Ages. There´s a visitor center and archaeological museum to put it all in context and display artifacts found in situ.
