    Folks, feel free to disagree: Buzzy, frequent flyer maven Ed Perkins has determined that each mile is worth between .7 and 1.5 cents. Although that's accurate, I still think it's generous because it's so hard to cash in the frequent flyer miles.

    But okay, let's say you can cash them in.

    Divide $500 by 25,000 miles and you get 2 cents per mile. Strikes me as a terrible deal. Anyone want to confirm or disprove my calculations?

    What is a good price for buying miles?

    AA is offering bonuses to purchase miles, starting at an extra 5K for buying 20K. Thus, 25K would cost $500. Is this a good per-mile price? When would you advise purchasing miles? BTW, this is the lowest the airline goes: no better than 2 cents a mile even if you buy 50K miles.

    Just checked the Federal Register. It says:

    This rule is effective August 23, 2011 except for the amendments to 14 CFR 399.84 which become effective October 24, 2011.

    • Enforces the full fare advertising rule as written (i.e., ads which state a price must state the full price to be paid). Carriers currently may exclude government taxes/fees imposed on a per-passenger basis.
    • Clarifies the rule’s applicability to ticket agents.
    • Prohibits carriers and ticket agents from advertising fares that are not the full fare and impose stringent notice requirements in connection with the advertisement of ‘‘each-way’’ fares available for purchase only on a roundtrip basis.
    • Prohibits opt-out provisions in ads for air transportation.

    Isn't this kind of misleading airfare advertisements already illegal  as per the new DOT requirements that airline fares must show total prices? Or is the new rules not yet in effect? I read that airlines cannot even use the each way pricing based on a roundtrip purchase  BS anymore. Anyone following the new DOT rules effectivity closely?

    I suppose we should've seen it coming... Spirit Airlines, always quick to jump on a tacky trend for its sales, couldn't resist. Do you all think this kind of come-on actually works? And if so, what kind of crowd are you attracting? Considering the recent guy caught pleasuring himself on a flight, I'd think airlines would be just a wee bit more cautious! I'd be real curious to see Spirit's numbers on this particular promotion...

    I think Kingfisher is going to reap bushels of bad press for this move, and the airline deserves every bit of it. Since the airlines want us to stay strapped into our seats for the whole flight (if they felt they could get away with it, they'd eliminate the bathrooms and fit us all with catheters), what is the problem with a blind passenger? What were they thinking?

    An Indian airline, Kingfisher (IT), removed a blind woman with her two children from the second leg of a domestic flight flight report many media outlets. 

    Kingfisher offloads Blind Woman

     

    Kingfisher (IT) is the only airline based in India that has a Five Star rating by SkyTrax.
