Senegal's historic Gorée Island

A quick ferry ride from capital Dakar this is a popular destination for visitors from the African diaspora as well as others interested in the translatlantic slave trade because it was the African coast's largest slave-trading centre from the 15th to the 19th century - for that reason it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site - and in addition to the slave quarters and the trader manses there are a couple of interesting museums here. Read more about this and other aspects of Senegal's capital in our post 'The Fascinatin' Rhymths of Dakar, Senegal'.
