Hiking on São Miguel in Portugal´s Azores Islands
Enrico PescantiniPortugal's answer to Spain's Canary Islands, the Azores are a nine-island grouping 1,529 kilometres (950 miles) out in the Atlantic Ocean west of the Iberian Peninsula. The largest (759km²/293 square mi.) and most populous of the archipelago, São Miguel, is home to capital Ponta Delgada, but also a spectacular volcanic but verdant landscape including towering cliffs and ancient laurisilva forests that make a truly splendid playground for nature and adventure lovers.Topping the…

Few visitors to the Slovak Republic (part of former Czechoslovakia) take the trip out to Slovakia’s magnificent mountains, but adventure travelers know what they have to offer: challenging hiking and spectacular alpine scenery.
The High Tatras, on the Polish border, are a scaled down version of the Alps, where snow stays all summer atop jagged granite peaks, waterfalls tumble from stark rock walls, and jewel like tarns sparkle in wide, green glacial valleys. And in the Malá Fatra mountains, a subsidiary range, deep narrow gorges and ridgetop trails offer great hiking, while a rich alpine flora is found along its quiet forest paths and richly green meadows.
On this hiker’s odyssey, you’ll make easy scrambles up local peaks, traverse long green valleys to high summit ridges, and meet the friendly locals who share the trails with you (hiking is Slovakia’s national sport!). Hikes range in length from five to eight hours, with a return to the hotel at the end of the day. If you feel like skipping any of the hikes, you’ll find opportunities to explore the local culture.

Happy New Year's from The World on Wheels. We're trying something a little different this week, a couple of rides on different kinds of wheels. Our first report of the year is a hidden gem...a fast, five mile ride down the San Gabriel River Trail, located about 20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. Come along for the ride: http://tinyurl.com/7xcdou2
There are 800 miles of hiking trails in Yosemite National Park with elevations ranging from 2000 feet to over 13,000 feet. My personal goal is to hike them all! 300 left to go. So, if your vacation plans include hiking in the Yosemite region and you'd like the inside scoop on which trails might be best for your adventure. Contact Kris@yosemite-tours.org

The hiking season is just staring up here in northern Finland and I can't wait to get back out on the bear trail (karhunkierros) again this year.
The Karhunkierros, or Bear Trail, is an 80km long hike through the Oulanka National Park and the most famous of all the Kuusamo and Ruka hiking trails.
The Oulanka National Park is the most popular national park in Finland, attracting almost 180,000 visitors every year and is well known for its diverse habitat, unique landscape and the variety of species that inhabit the park, from birds and animals to flora.
You can read more about it here: Ruka and Kuusamo
