A guide to trekking/climbing majestic Mount Kenya

Håkon Dahlmo     Kenya's highest mountain (and Africa’s second highest mountain after neighbouring Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro) located within an eponymous national park around the centre of the country, this extinct volcano is estimated to be 2.5 million years old. Time has taken its toll on the former, reducing the peak from around 6,500 meters originally to 5,199 today as well as eroding the crater. Luang Prabang trekking - the great outdoor side of Laos' ancient city

by Barry Northern Laos is famous for its natural beauty: rolling green hills and mountains interspersed with rice fields and countless water buffalo. From the moment we arrived in South East Asia, a trekking adventure through the countryside and staying with a local tribe family was top of our list of things to do. Once we arrived in Luang Prabang, we knew this was the place to do it.     read post

group in the High Tatras, Gerlach peak trail.

    High Tatras

Impressive Hikes in an Undiscovered Corner of Europe

    TRIP HIGHLIGHTS!

    • Challenge yourself with hikes to the summit of several peaks in the High Tatras, a unique, seldom-traveled corner of Europe

    • Enjoy scenic landscapes of limestone peaks and unique alpine wildflowers

    • Visit timeless villages with old-world charm

    • Discover the delights of historic Vienna and Prague (and optional tour of Krakow)

Few visitors to the Slovak Republic (part of former Czechoslovakia) take the trip out to Slovakia’s magnificent mountains, but adventure travelers know what they have to offer: challenging hiking and spectacular alpine scenery.

The High Tatras, on the Polish border, are a scaled down version of the Alps, where snow stays all summer atop jagged granite peaks, waterfalls tumble from stark rock walls, and jewel like tarns sparkle in wide, green glacial valleys. And in the Malá Fatra mountains, a subsidiary range, deep narrow gorges and ridgetop trails offer great hiking, while a rich alpine flora is found along its quiet forest paths and richly green meadows.

On this hiker’s odyssey, you’ll make easy scrambles up local peaks, traverse long green valleys to high summit ridges, and meet the friendly locals who share the trails with you (hiking is Slovakia’s national sport!). Hikes range in length from five to eight hours, with a return to the hotel at the end of the day. If you feel like skipping any of the hikes, you’ll find opportunities to explore the local culture.

  • Happy New Year's from The World on Wheels. We're trying something a little different this week, a couple of rides on different kinds of wheels. Our first report of the year is a hidden gem...a fast, five mile ride down the San Gabriel River Trail, located about 20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. • The hiking season is just staring up here in northern Finland and I can't wait to get back out on the bear trail (karhunkierros) again this year.

The Karhunkierros, or Bear Trail, is an 80km long hike through the Oulanka National Park and the most famous of all the Kuusamo and Ruka hiking trails.

The Oulanka National Park is the most popular national park in Finland, attracting almost 180,000 visitors every year and is well known for its diverse habitat, unique landscape and the variety of species that inhabit the park, from birds and animals to flora.

You can read more about it here: Ruka and Kuusamo
