6 of the greatest English-language travel books of all time

Peshkova Long before cheap flights and map apps, travel writing offered vicarious passage to distant places, and that impulse remains powerful. A good travel book collapses distance and time, letting us inhabit landscapes, cultures, and states of mind we may never physically reach. Even today, when information is abundant, good, thoughtful travel writing offers something rarer: meaning shaped by experience, not just facts. One obvious pleasure is vicarious escape. Travel books allow readers to…

The fascinating story of a medieval Buddhist pilgrim's 5,000-mile odyssey

Travel usually involves a lot of planning and packing and booking and backtracking. At age 70, though, there are many new ways to travel. For one thing, there is time travel, which is what I call revisiting a place that I visited long ago, just to see all the ch-ch-ch-changes, maybe even recognize somebody from the old days. I’d done this before and did it again during the pandemic, when my usual Asian haunts were locked down tighter than a you-fill-in-the-blank and so I reverted to my…

  • Hi eveyone,
I am starting a new blog the Best Travel Novels, so let me know if your novel is set in a far away land, and if you like to be featured. Just e-mail me at carabertoia@yahoo.com I am trying to get new authors exposure. I also think you will enjoy learning about the countries an the author writing process.
Please everyone take a look, tweet and follow.
This week I am happy to present Marita Hansen, and her highly praised novel set in New Zealand. In my years on cruise ships I visited New Zealand many times, a chapter in my novel is even set there. It is a beautiful country filled with the friendliest people I have ever met. Many times the casino staff doubled as tour guides, giving me the chance to visit the Maori community in Rotorua,so I was aware of the social tensions that exist in New Zealand. Like Last Exit to Brooklyn by Hubert Selby or Push by Sapphire, this novel is a graphic look at the life in Claydon a suburb of Auckland. The novel vividly describes the life led by a group of young adults. In her post Marita tell you how this novel came to life. Follow this link to my blog: http://thebesttravelnovels.blogspot.com/
