10 terrific adventure travel books to inspire wanderlust

Bulat Silvia Adventure travel is all about delving into the unknown, and more often than not, also getting out of your comfort zone. So if that appeals to you, here's a dozen terrific travel reads from people who left their own comfort zones to follow their dreams and seek out new cultures and experiences. There's something old and something new; several you might know, and many others you probably haven't heard of, plus a good representation of female voices. What they have in common is…

Writing 'In the Footsteps of Dracula: A Personal Journey and Travel Guide'

My obsession to travel to every site related to either the fictional Count Dracula or his real historical counterpart, Prince Vlad Dracula the Impaler, grew out of a visit to Whitby, England, where part of the novel Dracula takes place.  I stood on the cemetery hill where, in Bram Stoker's Dracula, Lucy Westenra and Mina Murray spent hour after hour sitting on their "favourite seat" (a bench placed over a suicide's grave near the edge of the cliff), gazing out toward the "headland called…

  • I'd like to put in a plug for Kathleen Jamie's 'Among Muslims,' a beautifully-written and very pertinent account of travel in Pakistan's northern provinces which I came across totally by accident - http://overlanding.wordpress.com/2010/07/07/travel-in-pakistan-kath...

  • Sandy, you might enjoy "At Home in the World: Memoirs of a Traveling Woman" in which I relate my adventures in far-flung places such as Bolivia and Bhutan, Tanzania and Thailand--and more. Sorry, none in Europian countries, which you like best. Some are volunteer trips, some adventuring to wild and wonderful sites; they span the globe. I leave next week for Guyana; maybe I'll write an article about that before I head off to Syria and Jordan in April.
  • Lost Angel Walkabout-One Traveler's Tales

My travel collection is filled with chills, spills, giggles and squeaks. Plus an interview with my travel writing hero, Tim Cahill. Getting great reviews! Check it out.

  • I have just finished reading 'A journey without maps' by Graham Greene. An exciting biographical story about the authors trip to West Africa where he undertook the exploration of the inside of Liberia on foot.

A story of dedication, mental & physical suffering, sacrifice and insight into Liberia in 1936. A definite choice for those interested in travel, exploration and downright descriptive beauty!

Here is the link if you wish to buy it, or follow this link to discover more literature from West Africa.

  • Lost Angel Walkabout—One Traveler’s Tales is a spirited collection of travel narratives recounting the haps, mishaps, and serendipitous adventures that give, travel-writer Linda Ballou, a sense of wonder and delight. Some of the stories like “Falling in the Footsteps of John Muir” and “Look Both Ways on Small Islands” are reflections that might make you glad you stayed home, while “River Wise” could inspire you to toss the TV clicker out the window and to explore our beautiful planet. All of the stories take you to special places where you share the sensual experience of being there without straining one muscle, getting altitude sickness, or tipping your canoe.
