The Andes' (and perhaps of South America's) most compelling country, thanks to attractions including bustling capital Lima with its colonial core; remnants of ancient civilizations like the Nazca lines, Machu Picchu, and temples of Cuzco; and the eco-lodges of the Peruvian Amazon.

Hiking in the Peruvian Andes

Jorge Arciniega   Everyone's heard of Machu Picchu, of course, and this magical spot does indeed live up to the hype. And most visitors take a train here from Cuzco, but for real adventure, find a guide or join a group to get there the old-fashioned way nature intended - on foot, with a four- to five-day trek through ancient sites and mountainside communities of weavers and farmers. The best known route is the 26-mile Inca Trail, consisting of three overlapping routes and much of it following…

Peru cited in 'South America's Iconic Vicuñas'

Visitors to part of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, and Peru (where it's the national animal and is even on the country's coat of arms) may come across this quintessential South American mammal, a camelid related to guanacos, llamas, and alpacas (which are descended from vicuñas) The smallest of the camelids, vicuñas stand about three feet tall at the shoulder; weigh between 70 and 150 pounds; and have long necks and legs as well as relatively small heads with long pointed ears. read…

Cuzco's Festival of the Sun among '4 of Latin America's Most Fascinating Festivals'

If you’re planning on choosing a holiday with a whole new sense of adventure, there seems to be a huge number of places still available to surprise - even shock and stun - the most jaded traveler. Yet while the temples of southeast Asia, vast canyons of North America, and unmistakable coastlines of Europe are all fantastic places to lose yourself for a week or two, one continent stands out from all the rest as a partygoer’s dream: Central and South America. We’ve all heard of the blowouts that…

  • Count me in Shelane. I'll want to read it.
  • I will be traveling with Mountain Lodges of Peru in June.  I will be publishing the experience here for those interested in hearing about it.
  • Thanks for I great reply Nina. But still even though we know that Machu Picchu is One of the Seven Wonders of the World and for that Machu Picchu doesn't need any other extra stuff in order to pimpoint the celebration of the centenial of the discovery of this Sacred Place; we should keep in mind that it is not just a simple celebration but its centenial and that deserves not little but much more and "something much more typical". About the way it is going to be held; there are opinions and not everybody can be happy about it; we have to consider and do all we can to find the right ways to do so and try to preserve all we have. Thanks for your idea again and Let's do a little in order to promote the pracetice of Rresponsible Tourism the way we do at www.TOURinPERU.com/about-us.html9012281454?profile=original
  • Regarding the Centennial;  I will try not to get on my bandwagon here.  I think it is important to recognize and be grateful but I am not in agreement with the choice of how the celebration will take place at the actual site.  I do not think that this sacred and natural area needs to be stomped on, electrified, blasted, illuminated, etc.  I see no need to run the electricity to illuminate the area at night.  I see no need to have internatoinal celebrities performing at the site and I could go on.  I hope my feelings are received in the manner in which I intend them.  I care deeply about this area and consider it my home in many way.  I think there should be celebrations and I think they should be done in a way that shows respect to the natural and delicate balance of the area.  There are many fabulous areas in the Southeast that can more easily recieve and hold larger crowds.  I understand that this will be a great income sourse for some but with it would  be handled differently.
  • The centenial of Machu Picchu

Peru’s President sent greetings of prosperity, employment and happiness to all Peruvian families in 2011. Garcia also gave a special greeting to Armed Forces and National Police, which are responsible for public security and will work today without a break on these celebrations. He also addressed the poor people who may not celebrate these holidays, and wished prosperity, employment and happiness for them.

Lots of celebrations are going to be held all over Peru in 2011 in order to celebrate Machu Picchu’s Centenial to the World.

  • "Peru Backpack Project". Preparing another group of American HS students to travel to Peru next month.  I think it's harder to prepare the parents than the students!  9011922855?profile=original

My heart is warmed by the outpouring of community support for collecting gently-used backpacks to take with us.  Boy Scout troops and people who don't even know us, are bringing backpacks for us to take down!

We are so excited about having botanist/wildfood expert on our trip.  We were able to hook up with a Turkish woman who will make a documentary of our trip after our first videographer had to cancel.  Students have started a countdown til our departure
on their FB pages.  We're all excited!
