The global economic slowdown is indeed having a strong impact on the tourism industry. The demand, by world travellers and holiday-makers, for B&Bs and similarly small lodging organizations is in large increase, as a clear signal of a trend that is growingly leaning towards an informal, friendly and less expensive style of accommodation.
The Barter Week is the original initiative launched by the Italian group of www.bed-and-breakfast.it to promote such organizations. It will run until November 21 and will involve 57 Roman B&Bs which have enthusiastically welcomed the idea.
Bartering is still very common, owing much of its renewed popularity to Internet. The popularity of bartering websites has soared as consumers are looking to new methods of shopping to counter the effects of the credit crunch.
Until November 21, you can barter goods and services for your stay. Such items as homemade marmalades or DVD collections can be suitable examples of barterable goods. Alternatively, the provision of gardening or plumbing services, or even of music lessons, can be just as much welcomed by a B&B owner.
Options and possibilities are indeed infinite. All one has to do is to confidently make his or her own bartering offer while making sure that this is serious, respectful and original. The Barter Week will give every traveller the opportunity to experience and enjoy Rome.

It is not as glamorous as the Cannes, not as original as the Sundance, not as old as Venice’s, but Rome’s International Film Festival is getting better every year and it has now become the world’s fourth most important event of its kind. The fifth edition of the Festival will be held from October 28 to November 5 in the beautiful surroundings of the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, the architectural complex realized in 2002 by Italian architect Renzo Piano.
This year’s competition will have many anticipated films such as “Last Night”by the Iranian director Massy Tadjedin, starring Keira Knightley and Eva Mendes, or “Rabbit Hole”, Nicole Kidman’s first production.
The “Window on the World/Focus” section will be dedicated to Japan’s cinema and culture and there will be a showing of the restored version of Akira Kurosawa’s key work “Rashomon”, for the centennial celebration of the Japanese film master.
But the Festival will also attract children with its premiere of the second Winx film “Winx Club 3D – Magica Avventura” in which the Italian cartoon favorite explores 3D for the first time.
The complete program and tickets are available here.

TripAlertz uses the power of group buying to sell members-only travel deals at deluxe hotels & resorts, and will launch in beta on October 5th (you can preview deals now). The multi-night deals are up to 75% off prices found on public online travel sites. And right now, they’re giving away 250 free trips to the first 10,000 members! Plus, you earn credits for future bookings (Trip Tokens) by referring friends.
How it works: Members reserve private travel deals within a one-week booking period (two weeks for international hotels). The more people that book, the lower the price goes, and everyone pays the same price when the deal clock hits zero. Once booked, members can opt to meet and share advice with their fellow travelers on a private collaboration page before and after their trip (not everyone travels on the same date).
There’s some great deals featured at hotels like the Trump International Beach Resort in Miami, the Crescent Hotel in Beverly Hills, and the Hotel Marina El Cid Spa & Beach Resort in Cancun. Check it out!
