Discovering Guatemala's second city, Quetzaltenango (aka Xela)

But 2,330 metres (7,644 feet) up in the western highlands just two or so hours from the capital, this country’s second largest city (pop. around 225,000) is a dynamic, untouristy trove that not only has a lot to offer on its own terms but is also a great jumping off point for other attractions, including Lake Atitlán and several of Guatemala's awesome ecotourism wonders. read post read post

Livingston cited in '12 Top Destinations for African-Diaspora Travel'

Welcome to February! Since 1970, it's also been Black History Month in the USA, and since 1995 in Canada, as well (whereas it's observed in October in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and the Netherlands). And though the reason for the African diaspora was tragic and horrific - the brutal, centuries-long trafficking of human slaves - it has also enriched many parts of the world, and indeed, world culture as a whole. So what better way to kick BHM off than with a look at a dozen of the most…

  • I remember discovering from a trip to Guatemala a few years ago how much I loved its cuisine, and I'm surprised it doesn't get more play outside the country's borders. So I was interested to come across this piece in Eater featuring a whole bunch of fantastic eateries in the capital - including, interestingly, one devoted to the cuisine of the Garífuna, the Afro-Guatemalans in Caribbean-coast areas like Livingston, descendants of immigrants from the Caribbean: https://www.eater.com/maps/best-restaurants-guatemala-city-tourism
