The USA's most populous state is practically a country unto itself, divided between green north and arid south. Highlights: San Francisco, Los Angeles, Palm Springs, San Diego, Napa/Sonoma wine country, Disneyland, redwood country, skiing, driving the Pacific Coast Highway, and lots more.

Our hearts go out to the people of Los Angeles County who have lost their homes and in some cases lives in the horiffic wildfires. To learn how to help, click here.

NoCal´s Greenhorn Guest Ranch on of the top 10 for wellness in the USA & Canada

A little over four hours northeast of San Francisco, in the little known and aptly named Lost Sierra (hidden between the larger Sierra Nevada and Cascade ranges, the name coined at the time when Pony Express riders galloped through Northern California to deliver the mail). Fitting then, that this is the only dude ranch in the Golden State that allows its guests to go faster than a walk on a horse – riders hitting the trail and breathing in fresh mountain air scented by the pine, fir and cedar…

This L.A. sign is among Google´s top most-searched spots in the USA - but not the one you think

David Vives/Pexels Coming in ninth on the top ten list is a Los Angeles sign - but not the famous one that spells HOLLYWOOD. This landmark identifies Beverly Hills (above), the affluent Los Angeles neighborhood that’s associated with lavish estates owned by celebrities; the 40-foot emblem we see today in the linear Beverly Gardens Park is actually a replica of one built in 1907. During spring and summer, a beautiful pond in front of the letters comes alive with blooming lilies, making for the…

SoCal´s Solvang - wine country and great Danes

Carol Highsmith Nestled in Southern California's Santa Ynez Valley, a 45-minute drive north of Santa Barbara and a bit over two hours from Los Angeles, this small town of just over 6,100 offers visitors a unique blend of nature and culture. One of Solvang's top attractions is its unique Danish, which you can explore by strolling its charming streets. Founded in 1911 by Danish immigrants, and its downtown remodeled in the 1940s to reflect that country's architectural heritage, Solvang has a…

  • From the mountains to the sea...today at The World on Wheels, we continue to tour the Golden State, moving from the mighty Sierras to the spectacular Central Coast. It's a trip to Morro Bay and Avila Beach with pictures and video included: http://tinyurl.com/29mzv2m

  • Will be in Monterey with a focus on the county fair there.
  • Curious what people have planned for Labor Day Weekend. I have some relatively off-the-usual-radar suggestions in my new app, Adventure Weekends West. Paddling with otters in  Morro Bay or a yurt stay in Big Sur sound pretty good to me.
  • Our effort to cover as much of our home state as possible this summer moves south of Tahoe and Gold Country to see the world's largest tree, baseball, firemen with guns, and...of course...this cute little goat. Our newest report is now online at The World on Wheels: http://tinyurl.com/3skeyt4

  • At The World on Wheels today, our summer-long tour of the Golden State continues. Geologists say that miners only took out 1/3 of the gold in the Motherlode...2/3 remains. We try to make a dent in that number, along with a day on the shore of beautiful Lake Tahoe: http://tinyurl.com/2elswxg

  • California has over 3,300 licensed wineries (almost half of the U.S. total) in 112 American Viticultural Areas (AVA). Out of all of those, this is my all-time favorite wine area. As we continue our state tour on The World on Wheels, come on along to Amador County in the Sierra Foothills: http://tinyurl.com/3jqfqx4

  • I'm not a tour fan, rather just get a map and do it myself. Your hotel or the chamber of commerce should have wine touring maps and free tasting coupons.
  • Great ideas and info.  Do you think it is better to Do it yourself or sign up for a tour group?  We'll have enough to have our own group.

  • Meredith: Another great way to explore the wineries is through with a scenic drive, like this one: http://www.myscenicdrives.com/drives/california/paso-robles-wine-co... . We have a couple others around there depending on how far you wish to venture out.  Hope this helps!
  • Haven't done a formal write up on the San Diego or north SD coast yet but have spent a lot of time there over the years. My sister has lived in the area for close to 40 years, from Escondido to IB, so a lot of our trips that way tend to be family visits.  I need to go there just to tour, without the family obs, and get some more flavor. We have two reports on the site, one for the SD Railroad museum in Campo, and our most popular page on the site (seriously, has more hits that any other page by far) is our Fields of Dreams report on Petco Park.

Way back when, before it was mainly a tourist destination, I used to work with the flower fields people and the Nurseryland (is it still there?) at that exit in Carlsbad back when I was a wholesale nursery salesman fresh out of college.
