The town of Elefsina is a European Capital of Culture for 2023

Charalambos Andronos Located on the Thriassian Plain just a 20-minute drive along the Saronic Gulf coast from Athens, this city of around 30,000 is now largely industrialised (home for example to the country’s biggest oil refinery) but its roots reach back to ancient Hellas. Founded in the 2nd millennium BCE, it became one of the five sacred cities of ancient Greece; was the birthplace of the 5th-century BCE tragic playwright Aeschylus; and the site of the Eleusinian Mysteries, initiations…

Athens cited as one of "10 of Europe's Cheapest Cities to Visit"

Europe is of course filled with amazing scenic and cultural sights and experiences, but it's also known as by and large an expensive place to visit. Yet it doesn't have to be! There are still a number of European cities and countries where you won't bust your wallet on lodging, dining, entertainment, and touring, and here are seven of them - many, but not all, in Eastern Europe (and of course don't forget that in budget travel, a good part of your savings occurs at the beginning and end…

Elvia Island cited in 'Can the Tourism Industry Survive the Climate Crisis?'

I recently caught this in The Guardian about how tourism is inextricably connected to the global warming crisis. Among other things, it observes that "one of the terrible ironies of the climate crisis is that some of the most beautiful – and popular – places in the world are also the most vulnerable. Which means as temperatures rise, extreme weather events increase, water sources dry up and natural habitats die, these places are facing another devastating loss: tourists." A sobering read;…

  • Absolutely safe!
As long as you avoid Syntagma square in Athens (only whenever people demonstrate). Everything else in Athens is easily accessible by the metro lines and of course in this hot summer you can access the rest of the mainland and the islands without any problems.
I fully recommend ... The Acropolis (and the relevant museum) in Athens, Argos and Nafplion in Peloponnesse, the island of Santorini for the sunsets, the island of Ikaria for the alternative Greek entertainment, Crete, and the Simos beach in the island of Elefonisos at the east-southern end of Peloponnesse.

  • Strikes and demonstrations this summer and now a lockout at the Acropolois. When will tourists say the hell with Greece I'm better off going somewhere peaceful for my vacation. Is this where you'd go if you're only going to take 1 vacation?
  • My brother has hijacked my Tripatini account to post a question on Ask A Travel Expert about cruising in the eastern Mediterranean.
Please answer if you can; he's leaving on the cruise in just a week. http://www.tripatini.com/forum/topics/eastern-med-cruise-tours
  • Bloomberg News reports: "Croatian tourism, accounting for about a sixth of the Balkan nation’s economy, will grow around 5 percent this year as Greece’s crisis drives visitors north." Just how bad -- quantitatively -- has tourism in Greece been hit this summer?
  • They haven't backed down on this yet. According to the Guardian, "The ruling socialists have vowed to pay up to €70 (£58) a day to cover costs incurred because of strikes. "We are guaranteeing to pay any extra room and board any visitor in Greece pays," said the tourism minister, Pavlos Geroulanos. "Even if [they are] stuck here because of a volcano in Iceland."

The promise highlights the extent to which Athens will go to attract tourists; the sector accounts for one in five jobs in Greece and nearly 20% of its GDP.
