The town of Elefsina is a European Capital of Culture for 2023

Charalambos Andronos Located on the Thriassian Plain just a 20-minute drive along the Saronic Gulf coast from Athens, this city of around 30,000 is now largely industrialised (home for example to the country’s biggest oil refinery) but its roots reach back to ancient Hellas. • Bloomberg News reports: "Croatian tourism, accounting for about a sixth of the Balkan nation’s economy, will grow around 5 percent this year as Greece’s crisis drives visitors north." Just how bad -- quantitatively -- has tourism in Greece been hit this summer?
  • They haven't backed down on this yet. According to the Guardian, "The ruling socialists have vowed to pay up to €70 (£58) a day to cover costs incurred because of strikes. "We are guaranteeing to pay any extra room and board any visitor in Greece pays," said the tourism minister, Pavlos Geroulanos. "Even if [they are] stuck here because of a volcano in Iceland."

The promise highlights the extent to which Athens will go to attract tourists; the sector accounts for one in five jobs in Greece and nearly 20% of its GDP.
  • Yahoo News reports: "Greece offered to compensate tourists stranded by labour unrest ahead of a new travel strike Tuesday as unions stepped up their assault against government austerity cuts."
Damage control public relations is my business, but from where you sit, to what extent will this offer help Greece?
  • Home from NYTimes travel show, where"Café Tempest:Adventures on a Small Greek Island" was the best selling travel book at Borders booth.CT takes you to Faros, a sunbleached haven where ice trays are still being test marketed and donkeys have the right of way.#1? thanks (afharisto) to Manhattan's chilly downpours.
  • Barbara, what ever happened with your tip?
