Gorizia is a European Capital of Culture for 2025

Krzysztof Golik   Located at the foot of the Julian Alps in Italy´s Friuli-Venezia Giulia region about 45 minutes from Trieste, Gorizia has a population of just over 33,000 and is rich in history dating back to the year 1000, as well as scenic beauty and a unique blend of Italian, Slovenian, and Austro-Hungarian influences dating back to its long tenure as part of the Habsburg empire. The Piazza della Victoria (Victory Square) is the hub of the old town, and must-visit historical landmarks…

Sicily, where what’s not on the tour itinerary is as important as what is

Victor Block   It happens all the time with the tour operator Overseas Adventure Travel. I start out expecting to write about the trip itself – in this case, Sicily's Ancient Landscapes & Timeless Traditions"-- and I end up writing about all the things that aren't on the itinerary – what OAT refers to as "learning and discovery." Sure, I wanted to focus on the extensive ruins of the Greeks and Romans from the 8th century BCE; the city market initiated by the Arabs in 900 CE still operates…

Witchy holiday doings in Italy

Truus, Bob & Jan too!! Never mind Santa Claus, here on the eve of the Epiphany on January 6th (the 12th day of Christmas) a friendly strega (witch) called La Befana comes overnight to leave good children candies and presents and the bad ones lumps of coal (though since every kid (though since every kid has likely been bad once or twice during the year, in their stocking they´ll also get dark-colored rock candy, to symbolize coal). read post

  • Strange to see this show in Rome, but to those of you who only know Webber as the composer of "Phantom" and other over-rated shows, it's worth going to Rome just to see this show. Webber and Rice used to compose amazing music; where did they go wrong?
  • “Jesus Christ Superstar” Back in Rome. Original Version On Stage!

    By BuzzInRome

The ever lasting musical Jesus Christ Superstar has come back to Rome running until November 14 and will eventually be performed in English in one of Rome’s biggest and most famous theatres: Teatro Sistina.

The set, though, is contemporary, no 1970s’ stage designing. This cult show by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber has been performed on the most prestigious world stages, a veritable classic of musical comedy.

The rock opera has a live orchestra and features several Italian pop music stars, such as Max Gazzè (Erode) and Mario Venuti (Pilate). The plot is based on Jesus’ last two weeks of life with a mix of rock music, religious topics and modern culture.

The version on show at Teatro Sistina, directed by Massimo Romeo Piparo, has been officially recognized by the Vatican for the Jubilee in 2000.

Teatro Sistina is at 129, Via Sistina. Shows will be held from Tuesday to Saturday at 9 pm. On Sundays at 5 pm. You can buy online tickets here .

There is Much More than the Vatican and the Colosseum!
  • Sally--
there's a perfect, local taverna on the bridge right at the piazza of Santi Giovanni e Paolo. I can't remember the name of it (could be "ponte" something), but you can't miss it. And you can sit in the window, drink, eat and watch the kids play in the piazza.

  • Sally:
I am not an expert on Cicheti but these are the places listed in the Slow Food 2011 guide book. I never travel anywhere in Italy without it and have never been disappointed. I would seriously suggest these places first before "winging" it in Venice. Venetians on a whole are wonderful people don't get me wrong it is just that I constantly hear about Tourists getting ripped off and it is a shame.. So:

    Da Alberto
Osteria da Alberto, Venezia, Calle Giacinto Gallina Cannaregio,, Telephone 041 5238

Trattoria All' Arco San Polo (Rialto), 436
    30125 VENEZIA(VE)

    Al Bacareto
    Campo San Samuele-San Marco 3447

CAVATAPPI. Campo de la guerra, 525/526 - san marco

    ****CODROMA
    Ponte del Soccorso
    30123 Venezia, Italia
    041 5246789
This is my favorite. I have been several times.

Good Luck.. Have a fab time. Feel free to contcat me.
  • One last Venetian query: Does anyone know a good place to enjoy the cicchetti bar snacks that are popular in Venice?
  • Thank you Maria. You are the second person to recommend Da Michele to me.
