Mostly rural and these days famously crunchy, the Green Mountain State is full of farms; bed and breakfasts; covered bridges; world-class ski spots; maple sugaring; charming towns like Bennington, Brattleboro, Burlington, Middlebury, Montpelier; and Stowe; and of course some of the USA's fabbest fall foliage.
I remember Burlington as being one of the highlights of my visit to Vermont, but didn't know the background of its comeback, and how the renaissance came about under mayor (now senator) Bernie Sanders in 1981-89. Today it's a truly sweet - and progressive - place to visit!
