The Sado estuary has been declared a reserva natural(23,971ha), Ramsar Site and a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA), largely on account of the 300-plus species of vertebrate recorded here. It is a special place for birdwatching, including white storks, herons and flamingos. The term Ecotourism is the umbrella name for the types of tourism that focus on natural areas. It is also responsible travel, that conserves the environment and sustains the well-being of local people.

There are two main types of TOURS:

1) NATURE TOURS (e.g. a tour that visits a beach or a wildlife sanctuary)
Ecologically sustainable tourism with a primary focus on experiencing natural areas.

2) ECO TOURS… (tours which incorporate ALL 4 aspects; Nature, Culture, Environmental & Conservation)
Ecologically sustainable tourism with a primary focus on experiencing natural areas that fosters environmental and cultural understanding, appreciation and conservation….as well as a strong focus on LOCAL operation.

TIES (The International Ecotourism Society) sets out these guidelines very clearly.
