Ecotourism in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands

picryl Let´s start with the fact that the Virgin Islands National Park covers nearly 60 percent of the island, based on land donated by millionaire philanthropist Laurence Rockefeller in 1956, and it harbors more than 20 trails which take hikers through diverse terrains, including various beaches, rock petroglyphs carved by the ancient Taíno people (in some cases more than a thousand years ago), and the ruins of centuries-old plantations (more about them below). The term Ecotourism is the umbrella name for the types of tourism that focus on natural areas. It is also responsible travel, that conserves the environment and sustains the well-being of local people.

There are two main types of  TOURS:

    1) NATURE TOURS (e.g. a tour that visits a beach or a wildlife sanctuary)
Ecologically sustainable tourism with a primary focus on experiencing natural areas.

    2) ECO TOURS… (tours which incorporate ALL 4 aspects; Nature, Culture, Environmental & Conservation)
Ecologically sustainable tourism with a primary focus on experiencing natural areas that fosters environmental and cultural understanding, appreciation and conservation….as well as a strong focus on LOCAL operation.

TIES (The International Ecotourism Society) sets out these guidelines very clearly.

You can also find more info on our Auckland Eco-tour.

  • The term ecotourism usually only encompasses the natural side of a location and its preservation through tourism, however the local human side of things is often overlooked. This following trip is a way to to discover West Africa's 'Smiling Coast'.

What better way to discover the local side of The Gambia than with the help of a knowledgeable and experienced local guide who will share his love for his country with you and take you to places that you wouldn't be able to find on a normal package holiday. To learn more, click here.
