A tribute to my friend, the late travel media icon Arthur Frommer

The legendary U.S. travel journalist and entrepreneur Arthur Frommer passed away November 18 at the age of 95. Born in Virginia and with an early boyhood in a small town in Missouri, Arthur was a lawyer who became a pioneering and great travel journalist, and who will be remembered as having helped open the joys of travel to the masses. While serving in the U.S. Army in Europe in the 1950s, he got the travel bug, came out with a travel guide for servicemen, and followed up in 1957 with…

What do you wear to Seven Magic Mountains?

Seven Magic Mountains is an art installation located in the Nevada desert, and the weather can be quite hot and dry. Therefore, it is recommended to wear comfortable and breathable clothing, such as shorts, t-shirts, and sandals or sneakers. You may also want to bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. It's also a good idea to bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated. While there is no strict dress code, it's important to dress appropriately for the weather and…

  • I love books that tell a great story but I want to learn something at the same time. I knew that since Tripaptin member Linda Ballou was a travel writer that I would learn about Hawaii but what I didn't realize is that she is a beautiful writer. This story takes place at the time in history where the Hawaiians are introduced to the Europeans as seen from the Hawaiian viewpoint. It is a story about a strong woman living in a country warlike country. Just get that picture of peaceful Hawaiians out of your head. She weaves a tale that keeps you intrigued all the way to the end. This is a great read about a fierce heroine. In fact, I liked the story so much I asked Linda to do an interview for my blog.  Follow this link to read her interview. http://thebesttravelnovels.blogspot.com/2011/10/travel-to-hawaii-wi...

  • Passing along from member Claire Saylor:

    Hello from Nature Landings!

We are the inflight magazine for Nature Air, a regional airline that flies around Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama.  I wanted to put out a line to see if anyone has interesting story topics on Costa Rica, Nicaragua or the Bocas del Toro region. We publish 6 editions each year with a distribution of 10,000 per edition -- mainly to our direct clients, as well as to hotels in the destinations we fly to. Focuses include new tours, eco-initiatives, people making a difference, unknown travel destinations, and more. Check us out online, at www.naturelandings.com . We also accept pitches from freelance journalists that live in the area.

  • Online book publishing service Blurb today launched a new way to publish collections of photos - as an eBook for the iPad. The new eBooks come in templated or custom two-page layouts, which readers can swipe through, search the text of and zoom into full resolution images.

Publishers pay $1.99 per book and get to keep 100% of the profit beyond that cost. Paper books from Blurb start at $10 each to print on demand. Two buck easy-to-make eBook publishing on demand sounds awesome.
